How to Create an AEO Content Audit Process
Priya Bothra · September 23, 2026
An AEO content audit evaluates your existing pages for how well they serve AI answers: whether each page maps to a real buyer question, answers it directly, contains accurate and current facts, provides evidence, is accessible to AI crawlers and is actually cited. The output is a decision for every page: keep, refresh, merge, expand or retire.
Most sites already have content that could perform well in AI answers with modest changes, and content that actively hurts because it is outdated or contradicts newer pages. A structured audit finds both. This guide describes a repeatable process, a scoring model and how to turn results into a plan.
How an AEO audit differs from an SEO content audit
| SEO content audit | AEO content audit |
|---|---|
| Traffic, rankings, backlinks per page | Citations and mentions in AI answers per page and cluster |
| Keyword targeting | Prompt cluster mapping |
| On-page optimization | Extractability: answer-first, self-contained sections |
| Thin or duplicate content | Also conflicting facts across pages |
| Page-level focus | Page plus third-party sources for the same topic |
The two overlap. Run them together when possible.
Step 1: Build the inventory
Export all indexable URLs from your CMS or a crawler. For each, capture:
- URL, title and content type.
- Publish and last updated dates.
- Search Console clicks and impressions.
- AI referral sessions, where tracked.
- Whether the page has been cited in AI answers you have sampled.
- Crawler access status for AI search bots, from logs.
Step 2: Map pages to prompt clusters
Assign each page to the prompt cluster it serves, based on your prompt research. Flag:
- Orphans: pages with no cluster. They may be low value.
- Gaps: clusters with no page.
- Overlaps: clusters with several competing pages, which can produce inconsistent facts.
Step 3: Score each priority page
Score pages in high-value clusters on six criteria from 0 to 2.
| Criterion | 0 | 1 | 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Directness | Answer buried or missing | Answer present but late | Direct answer in opening sentences |
| Extractability | Sections depend on each other | Partly self-contained | Sections stand alone |
| Accuracy | Contains outdated or wrong facts | Minor issues | Fully consistent with approved facts |
| Evidence | No sources or specifics | Some specifics | Specific, sourced, dated claims |
| Freshness | Stale for its content type | Due for review | Current |
| Access | Blocked or JS-dependent | Partial issues | Fully accessible HTML |
A total of 10 to 12 needs little work; 6 to 9 needs a refresh; 0 to 5 needs a rewrite or retirement decision.
The criteria reflect documented factors. Ahrefs found AI assistants cite fresher content on average than organic results; the GEO research paper found evidence such as statistics and citations improved visibility; and OpenAI states that sites blocking OAI-SearchBot will not appear in ChatGPT search answers.
Step 4: Check cluster-level performance
For each cluster, compare your pages with what AI answers actually cite. If AI systems consistently cite third-party pages instead of yours, note what those sources offer: more specific data, independent perspective, fresher information or better structure.
Step 5: Decide the action for each page
| Situation | Action |
|---|---|
| High value, high score | Keep; schedule routine review |
| High value, medium score | Refresh: fix facts, add direct answers and evidence |
| High value, low score | Rewrite |
| Several pages competing for one cluster | Merge into one strong page with redirects |
| Page with outdated facts and low value | Update facts or retire with redirect |
| Cluster with no page | Create a new page |
| Orphan with no value | Retire, redirect or noindex |
Step 6: Audit off-site content for the same clusters
For priority clusters, review third-party pages that describe you: review profiles, directories, partner pages and articles. Add fixes to the plan where facts are outdated. AI systems can repeat stale information from these sources: Ahrefs' 2026 benchmark reported that most AI models it tested repeated fabricated claims even when official sources contradicted them.
Step 7: Prioritize and schedule
Rank actions by cluster value, score gap and effort. Accuracy problems on high-value pages come first. Put the rest into the content calendar.
Step 8: Measure and repeat
After changes are published and recrawled, compare citations and visibility for affected clusters with the pre-audit baseline. Run a full audit annually and a lighter review of high-value pages quarterly.
Audit roles
| Role | Responsibility |
|---|---|
| Audit lead | Process, scoring consistency, final recommendations |
| Content team | Scoring and refresh execution |
| Product marketing | Accuracy review against brand facts |
| Technical SEO | Access and rendering checks |
| Subject-matter experts | Evidence and expertise review for key pages |
Common mistakes
Auditing only by traffic. Some low-traffic pages are frequently cited by AI.
Ignoring conflicts between pages. Two pages with different prices confuse AI systems.
Refreshing dates without changing content. It does not fix stale facts.
Skipping off-site sources. They often explain inaccurate answers.
Auditing once. Content decays; audits should recur.
A hypothetical example
A hypothetical marketing analytics company audits 400 pages. It finds 60 pages mapped to its eight priority clusters, 12 clusters with overlapping pages that state different feature limits, and 140 orphaned posts. Scoring shows most priority pages bury their answers and cite no sources. The company merges overlapping pages, refreshes the top 40 with direct answers and sourced data, retires or redirects most orphans and updates three review profiles with outdated plan limits. Follow-up sampling tracks citations for each cluster.

FAQ
What is an AEO content audit?
An AEO content audit evaluates existing pages for how well they serve AI-generated answers: whether they map to buyer questions, answer directly, contain accurate and current facts, include evidence, are accessible to AI crawlers and are cited. Each page gets a keep, refresh, merge, expand or retire decision.
How is an AEO audit different from an SEO audit?
An AEO audit adds prompt cluster mapping, extractability scoring, accuracy checks against approved facts, detection of conflicting facts across pages, AI citation data and review of third-party sources. It works best alongside a traditional SEO audit.
How often should I run an AEO content audit?
Run a full audit annually and review high-value pages quarterly. Also re-audit affected pages after major product, pricing or positioning changes.
What should I do with outdated content?
If the page serves a valuable cluster, refresh it with current facts and evidence. If it has little value, retire it with a redirect to a relevant page. Outdated facts are a common source of inaccurate AI answers.
Should I merge overlapping pages?
Often, yes. Several pages competing for the same question can contain conflicting facts and split signals. Merging them into one strong page with redirects usually improves clarity for readers and AI systems.
How do I know which pages AI systems cite?
Sample relevant prompts repeatedly across AI assistants and record cited URLs, or use an AI visibility monitoring platform that captures citations over time.
Do I need to audit third-party content?
Yes, for priority topics. Review profiles, directories, partner pages and articles about your brand influence AI answers, and outdated facts there can override improvements to your own pages.
Conclusion
An AEO content audit shows which existing pages already work for AI answers, which need focused refreshes and which are causing confusion. Mapping pages to prompt clusters, scoring directness, extractability, accuracy, evidence, freshness and access, and reviewing off-site sources turns a large content library into a clear action plan.
Start with your top eight prompt clusters rather than your whole site. Score the pages that serve them, fix accuracy issues first and measure citations after recrawling. Bob Builds AI can supply the citation and crawler data the audit depends on.
