AEO Cheat Sheet for Founders: The One-Page Version

Dharini Shah · September 27, 2026

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making your company easy for AI assistants and search features to find, understand, quote and recommend. For a founder, it comes down to five jobs: let AI crawlers in, publish clear answers to the questions buyers ask, keep your brand facts consistent everywhere, earn mentions on the sites AI tools cite, and measure visibility across repeated prompts instead of chasing a single "AI ranking."

Everything below is a compressed reference you can scan in five minutes and hand to whoever owns marketing, with a source behind every claim.

The 30-second version

AEO is not a separate universe from SEO. Google states in its documentation on AI features that "there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." The same crawlable, trustworthy, well-written pages that earn search visibility are the raw material AI answers draw on.

What changes is the outcome. An AI assistant often answers the question and names a shortlist before a buyer visits any website. That makes three things matter more than they did in classic SEO: how directly your pages answer questions, how consistently the web describes your company, and how often other trusted sources mention you. If you want the longer comparison of the two disciplines, read why AEO is replacing parts of traditional SEO.

Why founders should care in 2026

Founders should care because buyers now research vendors inside AI tools, and those tools shape the shortlist before your sales team is involved. A Gartner survey of 645 B2B buyers found that 45% used generative AI during a recent purchase, mainly to research vendors, and 67% prefer a buying experience without a sales rep.

The scale of AI search is also no longer small. At Google I/O in May 2026, Google said AI Mode had passed 1 billion monthly users, with queries more than doubling every quarter.

Clicks are the part that shrinks. A Pew Research Center analysis of 68,879 searches found users clicked a result on 8% of visits when a Google AI summary appeared, versus 15% without one, and only 1% clicked a link inside the summary itself. The practical implication for a founder: being named in the answer is increasingly the visit.

The cheat sheet table

The table below is the one-page summary. It is a framework, not a guarantee: no AI platform promises placement to anyone, and OpenAI says plainly in its ChatGPT search help article that allowing its crawler does not guarantee where you appear.

5. MeasurementTrack presence across many prompt runsRun 10 to 20 buyer prompts across two or three AI tools and log resultsAI answers vary run to run, so single checks mislead

Job 1: Let the right crawlers in

AI search products can only cite pages their crawlers can reach, so access is the first thing to check. Each company runs several bots with different purposes, and blocking the wrong one can remove you from AI answers without anyone noticing.

The short reference:

  • OpenAI: OAI-SearchBot powers ChatGPT search, and OpenAI's bot documentation states that "sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers." GPTBot is used for training and can be controlled separately.
  • Anthropic: ClaudeBot handles training, Claude-SearchBot handles search indexing and Claude-User handles user-initiated fetches, and each needs its own rule, according to Search Engine Land's coverage of Anthropic's crawler documentation.
  • Perplexity: PerplexityBot surfaces and links sites in Perplexity and, per Perplexity's crawler documentation, is not used to train foundation models.
  • Google: AI Overviews and AI Mode use normal Googlebot crawling. Google-Extended is the separate control for whether content is used for Gemini training.

Founder decision: you can allow search crawlers while blocking training crawlers if you prefer. That choice is a business call, but make it deliberately. A blanket "block all AI bots" rule written in 2023 may be costing you visibility today. For the technical walkthrough, see the guide on how to make your website readable to AI crawlers.

Job 2: Publish answers, not teasers

Answer-first content means the direct answer to a question appears in the opening sentences of a page or section, before any context or storytelling. AI systems extract passages, and a passage that answers the question without needing the rest of the page is easier to quote.

The checklist for any important page:

  • Open with a definition or direct answer ("X is...", "The best option for Y is...").
  • Use headings that mirror how buyers phrase questions.
  • State who the product is for, what it costs or how pricing works, and what it does not do.
  • Add specifics a model can cite: numbers, dates, named standards and linked sources.
  • Keep each section understandable if it were copied out on its own.

There is research behind the evidence point. The GEO paper from Aggarwal and colleagues, published at KDD 2024 and tested on 10,000 queries, found that adding citations, quotations and statistics produced the largest visibility gains in generated answers, up to 40% on one metric, while keyword stuffing did not help. It was a controlled research setup, so treat it as directional. A practical guide to the writing side is how to write extractable content.

Job 3: Make your company facts consistent

Brand fact consistency means every place that describes your company, from your homepage to review profiles, gives the same answer about what you do, who you serve and how you differ. AI tools combine information from many sources, and when those sources disagree, the answer gets vague or wrong.

A founder-level exercise that takes under an hour: write one paragraph that defines the company, one line on the ideal customer, three differentiators and a pricing summary. Then compare that text against your homepage, pricing page, LinkedIn page, G2 or Capterra profile, Crunchbase entry and any partner listings. Fix the mismatches, starting with outdated positioning from earlier pivots, which is a common problem for startups.

Accuracy is worth watching closely. An Ahrefs 2026 benchmark reported that most AI models repeated fabricated claims even when official sources contradicted them. Clear, consistent, widely repeated facts are your best defense.

Job 4: Earn mentions where AI tools look

Third-party mentions are the strongest lever most founders underuse. An Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands found that branded web mentions had a 0.664 correlation with visibility in Google AI Overviews, compared with 0.218 for backlinks. The authors stress this is correlation, not causation, and 26% of the brands studied had no AI Overview mentions at all.

Where those mentions live differs by platform. Profound's analysis of 680 million citations found Wikipedia was ChatGPT's most cited source at 7.8%, while Reddit led for Perplexity at 6.6% and for Google AI Overviews at 2.2%, followed by YouTube and Quora. Ahrefs' 2026 benchmark also identified YouTube mentions as the strongest AI visibility signal among the factors it studied.

Practical moves for a startup:

  • Get listed and reviewed accurately on the review and comparison sites your category uses.
  • Contribute expertise to industry publications, podcasts and expert roundups.
  • Answer real questions in communities where your buyers already talk, under your own name and with disclosure.
  • Publish a short product explainer or demo on YouTube.

Avoid planted reviews or fake forum posts. Beyond the reputational risk, the FTC's rule on fake reviews and testimonials bans fake and AI-generated reviews and undisclosed insider reviews, with civil penalties. This is general information, not legal advice.

Job 5: Measure the right way

AEO measurement means sampling: you run a fixed set of buyer prompts repeatedly across the AI tools your audience uses and track how often you appear, how often you are cited and how you are described. Single screenshots of an AI answer tell you very little.

The reason is variability. Research from SparkToro and Gumshoe, based on 2,961 runs across ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI tools, found less than a 1 in 100 chance of getting the same brand list twice and less than a 1 in 1,000 chance of the same order. The researchers concluded that visibility percentage across many runs is a reasonable metric, while "ranking position in AI" is not.

The founder dashboard, kept to five numbers:

MetricWhat it tells you
Visibility rateShare of prompt runs where your brand appears
Citation rateShare of runs where your pages are linked as a source
Recommendation shareHow often you are recommended versus named competitors
Description accuracyWhether AI tools state your product, pricing and audience correctly
AI referralsVisits from AI tools, such as ChatGPT traffic tagged with utm_source=chatgpt.com

Two helpful data points: OpenAI's publisher FAQ confirms ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, and Google Search Console added generative AI performance reports in June 2026 that show impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, though at launch they did not include queries, clicks or position. For a deeper framework, see how to measure AI search visibility.

What to skip: the myth column

Founders get pitched a lot of AEO shortcuts. These are the ones the evidence does not support today.

"You need an llms.txt file." Google's John Mueller said in June 2026 that llms.txt is "purely speculative for now" and that none of the AI systems use it. It is cheap to add, but it is not a priority.

"Schema markup gets you cited by AI." An Ahrefs study of 1,885 pages that added schema against 4,000 controls found no clear benefit for AI citations, and the authors said they "can't tell whether the schema did a tiny bit of good or nothing at all." Microsoft's Fabrice Canel has said schema helps Microsoft's LLMs understand content, so the picture is mixed. Keep valid schema for regular search features, but do not treat it as an AI shortcut.

"FAQ schema drives rich results." Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026. The markup can stay without harm, and the FAQ content itself is still useful to readers and AI systems.

"We can buy our way into ChatGPT answers." OpenAI states that ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives. Paid placement and organic answers are separate.

A hypothetical 30-day plan for a seed-stage startup

The following is a hypothetical example of how a founder with no dedicated SEO hire might sequence the work. It assumes a few hours a week from one marketer or the founder.

Week 1: Access and baseline. Audit robots.txt and CDN bot settings. Write 15 prompts a buyer might ask, such as "What is the best invoicing tool for a five-person design studio?", run them in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, and log who appears.

Week 2: Facts. Write the one-paragraph company definition and align the homepage, pricing page and main review profiles to it.

Week 3: Answers. Rewrite the openings of the five pages that matter most for buying decisions, usually the homepage, pricing, one core product page and two comparison or use-case pages.

Week 4: Mentions and re-measure. Identify three third-party sites that appear in AI answers for your category and start the work to be listed or reviewed there. Re-run the same prompts and compare, keeping in mind that one month is short and variation between runs is normal.

Common founder mistakes

Delegating AEO as a pure content task. Much of the work touches positioning, pricing clarity and partnerships, which need founder input.

Only tracking traffic. Because AI answers reduce clicks, a traffic-only view undercounts influence that happens before or without a visit.

Testing once and panicking. One bad AI answer is a data point, not a trend. Sample repeatedly before you act.

Ignoring what AI says about you. Outdated or wrong descriptions spread. Check accuracy as often as you check presence.

FAQ

What is AEO in simple terms?

AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the practice of making your company easy for AI assistants and search features to find, understand, quote and recommend. It covers letting AI search crawlers access your site, writing pages that answer buyer questions directly, keeping your company facts consistent across the web, earning mentions on sources AI tools cite and tracking how often you appear in AI answers across many prompt runs.

How is AEO different from SEO for a startup?

SEO aims to rank pages and win clicks from search results. AEO aims to have your brand included and described accurately inside answers from tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode. The foundations overlap heavily, since Google says its AI features have no extra requirements beyond normal search. AEO adds more weight on direct answers, off-site mentions and sampled visibility measurement.

What should a founder do first for AEO?

Start with crawler access. Check that robots.txt and CDN settings allow search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot. OpenAI states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not appear in ChatGPT search answers. After that, write a clear one-paragraph company definition and make sure your homepage and main profiles match it.

Not as a priority. Google's John Mueller described llms.txt as "purely speculative for now" in June 2026 and said none of the AI systems use it. Google also states that no special AI text files are needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Adding one is low cost, but crawl access, clear content and consistent brand facts matter far more.

How do I measure AEO results?

Measure AEO by sampling. Pick 15 to 50 prompts real buyers would ask, run them repeatedly across the AI tools your audience uses and track visibility rate, citation rate, recommendation share versus competitors and description accuracy. Research from SparkToro and Gumshoe found AI brand lists rarely repeat exactly, so percentages across many runs are more reliable than any single answer.

Can a small startup compete with big brands in AI answers?

It can in narrower, specific questions. AI tools answer detailed prompts, such as tools for a particular team size or industry, where a focused startup can be the clearest source. Ahrefs found branded web mentions correlate more strongly with AI Overview visibility than backlinks do, so earned mentions in reviews, communities and publications can help a young company without years of link building.

Does schema markup help with AEO?

The evidence is mixed. An Ahrefs study of pages that added schema found no clear effect on AI citations, while Microsoft has said schema helps its LLMs understand content. Google says no special markup is needed for its AI features. Keep valid schema for regular search features and clarity, but do not expect it to drive AI visibility on its own.

How long does AEO take to show results?

There is no fixed timeline, and no platform guarantees placement. Fixes like unblocking a crawler can matter once pages are recrawled, while earning third-party mentions and changing how AI tools describe you usually takes longer. Set a baseline with a fixed prompt set, then re-measure monthly so you can separate real trends from normal run-to-run variation.

Conclusion

AEO for founders comes down to five jobs: open the door to AI search crawlers, answer buyer questions directly, keep your company facts consistent, earn mentions where AI tools look and measure presence across many prompt runs. None of it requires exotic files or tricks, and most of it strengthens your traditional search presence at the same time.

The practical implication is that AEO is partly a positioning exercise, which is why it benefits from founder attention rather than being handed off as a content task. A useful next step is to run fifteen real buyer prompts across two or three AI assistants this week and compare what they say about you with what your website says. If you want to turn that check into ongoing monitoring and a prioritized fix list, Bob Builds AI can help you set it up.
